Oil fuels the economic machinery of agro-capitalism as the food so produced fuels the bodies of its workers. Dániel Máté’s video installation Indebted to the Earth takes as its point of departure the difference between the amount of energy needed for the industrial production of food and the energy value of this food. While at the beginning of the 20th century, 2.5 calories of energy were needed to produce one calorie of food, this ratio has increased tenfold by today. The burning of the 'can’ in the video symbolically represents the energy required to manufacture and transport the can and to produce the food it contains.

Underscoring the meditative video, Dániel Máté delivers a personal account of his research, focusing on the correlations of energy-intensive production, canning and transport. The installation environment around the work also evokes this system of relations: the column evokes the towers used in hydrocarbon extraction, while the pipe frame structure alludes to industrial warehouses and the world of transportation. The artist’s research explores the energy consumption of the food industry through the word pair debt-loan, highlighting that the inequality of distribution is not only true for the use of hydrocarbons, but also for the functioning of society. The food security of the West is based on the exploitation of the global South, while the security of the middle and upper classes is based on the exploitation of the working class. So, even though we are investing unprecedented amounts of energy in agriculture, starvation has not been eliminated, and the distribution of resources remains disproportionate.

Geothermal heat, walking, and the energy of the artist’s body are the
main characters in Dániel Máté’s Icelandic travelogue. Exploration and
introspection merge to build relational knowledge in space.

Things that are needed

Exhibited in the group show “C80- Aesthetic of Cancer?”

Infrastructures
and systems are recurring characters in Dániel Máté’s work. Reflecting on the
histopathology laboratory of the Department of Pathology and Experimental
Cancer Research, his two ensembles of works use symbolic means to represent the
complex process of cancer diagnostics, an invisible system that requires the work
of up to 10-12 people per sample. The works feature diagnostic tools ranging
from rubber gloves, slides and digital microscopes through the multitude of
tumour tissue samples stored in the building. The support frame of the
installations is itself a system: correctly assembled, the steel tubes form a
strong skeleton, but one inadequately tightened screw and it all becomes unstable.

One of the
images is a photo of Tibor Vilt’s (also symbolic) relief, a monument to radium
therapy from the 1930s. This therapy was also the most successful cancer
treatment of the time, but today the sculpture on the side of the Institute of
Traumatology is as hidden and neglected as the discourse surrounding the
disease.

	PEOPLE LONG FOR WARMTH
Exhibited in the group show of the doctoral students of HUFA, titled “Szigetek és lehetőségeik”.

Curated by Júlia Salamon, Balázs Kicsiny

13 December 2023 – 27 January 2024
AQB Projectspace

The installation exhibited in the group show “Szigetek és lehetőségeik” at AQB Projectspace, consists of two photographic works and a single-channel video installation.

The video installation is a Hungarian language video adaptation of my lecture performance titled the same and was first performed in the “Not Quite King, Not Quite Fish” Artistic Research Symposium hosted by the Doctoral Departments of Vilnius Academy of Arts, on the 9th of November 2023

During the lecture, I went through the history of the Calorie from its inception as a measurement through its migration to medical and food science through indirect calorimetry, its’ status in our collective mind and the ideological and political factors connected to it. Through this concept, it is possible to tell the story of modernism particularly the history of mass food production and mass housing in the after-war era, and the new model of the ideal human being that comes into being in consequence. This journey through energy production both inside and outside of the human body allows us to critically engage with the concept and history of modernity while acknowledging its necessity during this historical period. I used the heat of the human body as constituted by inner heat (oxidizing food) and outer heat (housing, central heating) as a metaphor to deal with both the systematic and the personal and tell the story of the warmth of our bodies.

This lecture performance was first performed during the “Not Quite King, Not Quite Fish” Artistic Research Symposium hosted by the Doctoral Departments of Vilnius Academy of Arts, on the 9th of November 2023

The lecture performance is telling the story of the modernization of the home through two crucial factors of modern living, heating, and food production. I approached the convergence of these two fields in my solo exhibition show titled „Warmth of our Bodies” (curated by Dalma Eszter Kollár at Budapest Gallery) through the question of energy, primarily the heat of the human body. This heat could be theoretically reduced to two main sources, an inner one generated by oxidizing food and an outer one regulated by the temperature of our surroundings. In my research and in the exhibition, I investigated how both aspects, food, and the housing situation (and primarily the heating of it) had become
more centralized and standardized during modernity and the 20th century. These tendencies moved dwelling and eating from the social realm to the ideological and industrial, creating complex, larger-than-human
scale systems.
During the lecture, I will go through the history of the Calorie from its inception as a measurement through
its migration to medical and food science through indirect calorimetry, its’ status in our collective mind and the ideological and political factors connected to it. Through this concept, it is possible to tell the story of
modernism particularly the history of mass food production and mass housing in the after-war era, and the new model of the ideal human being that comes into being in consequence. This journey through energy production both inside and outside of the human body allows us to critically engage with the concept and
history of modernity while acknowledging its necessity during this historical period. I will use the heat of the
human as constituted by inner heat (oxidizing food) and outer heat (housing, central heating) as a metaphorto deal with both the systematic and the personal and tell the story of the warmth of our bodies.

	WARMTH OF OUR BODIES
Curated by Dalma Eszter Kollár
9 December 2022 –
12 February 2023
Budapest Gallery

Dániel Máté’s exhibition takes the concept of calories as its point of departure. Until around the 1980s, in Hungary, calorie was not only used for the purpose known today, i.e. to measure the energy content of food, but heat, or more precisely, the amount of energy used for heating was also measured in calories. Despite having sparked much scientific controversy since its introduction in 1824, this unit of measurement is perfectly suitable for determining the focal points of Dániel Máté’s work: the home and the body.
The constant body temperature of humans requires both adequate external temperature and a nutritional intake that provides the energy necessary for the normal functioning of our thermoregulation. And although in welfare societies both conditions are considered essential and always available, it is important to bear in mind that there are not only economic, political and social, but also physiological and psychological obstacles to achieving ideal conditions for our body temperature.
Created specifically for this exhibition, the photographic and installation-based works explore the heating of our homes and our relationship with food across two timelines. Several works evoke the (object) culture of the 1960s and ‘70s, as this was when district heating began to spread in Hungary and natural gas was soon introduced in more and more households. The same period also saw a significant boom in the refrigeration industry in Hungary, and thus in the food industry as well, with products such as frozen ready meals and prepared meals. The exhibition is brought back to the present by the artist’s works of personal tone, dealing with his own eating disorder among other things, as well as his group of artworks reflecting on the energy crisis.

Exhibited in the group exhibition titled “Plant Kingdom” in Budapest Gallery.
Curated by Flóra Gadó and Dalma Eszter Kollár

In 2020, during the first wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, Dániel Máté started not only his Ordinary
Constellations series, but also growing houseplants. Collecting, caring for and propagating plants and
germinating seeds was his way out of confinement and the resulting mentally stressful situation. He created ephemeral installations of everyday objects in his home and studio, captured them in
photographs, and over time plants with increasingly important roles in his environment appeared in the photos along with the tools (such as flower pots) used to care for them.
The objects and creatures in these small-scale compositions are metaphors not only for human emotions
related to anxiety and isolation, but also for the paradoxical situation of controlling and even drastically
interfering with the life of houseplants for the sake of their ‘proper development’. Somewhat like when
during a pandemic, the government restricts our daily activities in the interest of our own health.
